A 5.3‐million‐year history of monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia ArchiMer
Stuut, Jan‐berend W.; De Deckker, Patrick; Saavedra‐pellitero, Mariem; Bassinot, Franck; Drury, Anna‐joy; Walczak, Maureen H.; Nagashima, Kana; Murayama, Masafumi.
New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million‐year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical‐monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the northern hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased...

Attempts to predate on gadid fish otoliths demonstrated by naticid gastropod drill holes from the Neogene of Mill-Langenboom, The Netherlands Naturalis
Gaemers, P.A.M.; Langeveld, B.W..
Incomplete drill holes produced by naticid snails are occasionally found in late Cenozoic gadid otoliths from the North Sea Basin. Among the Neogene otoliths found at Mill-Langenboom naticid drill holes are relatively common. Their occurrence is linked to strata that formed under reduced rates of sedimentation and/or that reflect non-sedimentation and erosion. The Upper Miocene–Upper Pliocene deposits at Mill-Langenboom (province of Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands) constitute a condensed sequence comprising most North Sea Basin stages of this interval from the Gramian to the end of the Pliocene, as demonstrated by index taxa amongst gadid otoliths, with a considerable hiatus between Miocene and Pliocene strata. The lag deposit at the base of the Pliocene...

Gliridae (Rodentia, Mammalia) from the Upper Pliocene of Tegelen (province of Limburg, The Netherlands) Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
Two species of dormouse have been found in the Upper Pliocene clays of Tegelen, Muscardinus pliocaenicus and Glirulus pusillus. The latter is the first record of this genus in The Netherlands. Muscardinus pliocaenicus shows derived characteristics and is close to the Recent hazelmouse M. avellanarius. The record of Glirulus pusillus is one of the last in Europe. Like the flying squirrel Hylopetes debruijni, also known from Tegelen, G. pussilus ranks among a group of Pliocene animals with its living relatives in Asia. Thus, there is an analogy with the Tertiary flora, which also has relicts in the same area.

Holoplanktonic Mollusca (Gastropoda: Pterotracheoidea, Janthinoidea, Thecosomata and Gymnosomata) from the Pliocene of Pangasinan (Luzon, Philippines) Naturalis
Janssen, A.W..
Fifteen samples taken from interbedded sandstone, siltstone and claystone of Pliocene age, underlying the Bolinao Limestone, at the localities Anda, Roxas and Tiep (Pangasinan, Luzon, Philippines), were analysed for holoplanktonic gastropods; they have yielded 50 species (16 Heteropoda, one Janthinidae, and 33 Pteropoda, the latter consisting of 30 Euthecosomata, two Pseudothecosomata and one Gymnosomata). Faunal diversity between the localities sampled is restricted and explained by differences in sample size and/or preservation. The time interval represented by all samples taken together is postulated to have been brief. Fifteen new taxa (= 30% of the total number of encountered holoplanktonic molluscan species) are erected; Atlanta lingayanensis sp....

Low-frequency Pliocene climate variability in the eastern Nordic Seas ArchiMer
Risebrobakken, Bjorg; Andersson, Carin; De Schepper, Stijn; Mcclymont, Erin L..
The Pliocene (5.3-2.6Ma) is often described as a relatively stable climatic period, with warm temperatures characterizing high latitudes. New suborbital resolved stable isotope records from Ocean Drilling Program Hole 642B in the eastern Nordic Seas document that the Pliocene was not a stable period characterized by one climate. Rather, seven distinct climate phases, each lasting between 150,000 and 400,000years, are identified and characterized in the time interval 5.1-3.1Ma. Four of the transitions between the defined climate phases occurred close to an eccentricity minimum and a minimum in amplitude of change for Northern Hemisphere summer insolation, while two occurred around an eccentricity maximum and a maximum in amplitude in insolation change....

Mytilus antiquorum J. Sowerby, 1821 and other Pliocene mussels (Mollusca, Bivalvia) from the Southern North Sea Basin Naturalis
Vervoenen, M.; Wesselingh, F.P.; Nieulande, F.A.D. van.
Mytilus antiquorum J. Sowerby, 1821, is recorded from the Coralline Crag Formation of East Anglia (UK) and the Lillo Formation (Oorderen, Kruisschans and Merksem members) of the Antwerp area (Belgium). The species is diagnosed on the basis of newly collected material and differentiated from modern European mussel species. The presence of M. antiquorum in the southern North Sea Basin is restricted to the Middle (Piacenzian) and early Late Pliocene (Gelasian). A possible occurrence of the species in the latest Pliocene of northern Greenland is discussed. A second Middle- Late Pliocene North Sea Basin species, tentatively referred to as M. edulis forma giganteus Wood, 1874, is diagnosed and discussed. The systematic status of this species remains unsolved. In...

Notes on North Sea Basin Cainozoic echinoderms, Part 2. The echinoid Temnechinus woodii (Agassiz in Agassiz & Desor, 1846) from the Pliocene of the Netherlands Naturalis
Jagt, John W.M.; Idema, Jan.
The Pliocene temnopleurid echinoid Temnechinus woodii (Agassiz in Agassiz & Desor, 1846) (= T. excavatus Forbes, 1852) is recorded from the Westerschelde at Ellewoutsdijk (province of Zeeland) and from borehole IJsselmuiden-l near Wezep (province of Overijssel). First described from the Coralline and Red crags (Pliocene-Lower Pleistocene) of southeast England, and long held to be confined to those deposits, material apparently assignable to T. woodii was recorded in the 1940s and 1950s from boreholes at Roosendaal and Oosterhout (province of Noord-Brabant). All Dutch records are from deposits referred to the Oosterhout Formation, which correlates with the Lillo Formation in the Antwerp area (Belgium), from where, perhaps surprisingly, T. woodii is...

Regarding the real diversity of Glyptodontidae (Mammalia, Xenarthra) in the late Pliocene (Chapadmalalan Age/Stage) of Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)
ZURITA,ALFREDO E.; TAGLIORETTI,MATÍAS; DE LOS REYES,MARTÍN; CUADRELLI,FRANCISCO; POIRE,DANIEL.
ABSTRACT A large diversity of Glyptodontidae has been proposed as characterizing the Chapadmalalan Age (Pliocene). Most of these taxa were recognized on the basis of partial dorsal carapaces and/or caudal tubes, whereas the main diagnostic characteristic is a particular morphology of the exposed surface of the osteoderms. From a biostratigraphic point of view some species are biostratigraphically important. The Upper Chapadmalalan is based on the Paraglyptodon chapadmalensis biozone. Both the re-evaluation of the type and referred materials and new significant findings from the Chapadmalal and El Polvorín Formations indicate that the diversity of Pliocene Glyptodontidae is more limited than previously supposed. The particular morphology of the exposed...

Sea surface temperature variability in the Norwegian Sea during the late Pliocene linked to subpolar gyre strength and radiative forcing ArchiMer
Bachem, Paul E.; Risebrobakken, Bjorg; Mcclymont, Erin L..
The mid-Piacenzian warm period (3.264-3.025 Ma) of the Pliocene epoch has been proposed as a possible reference for future warm climate states. However, there is significant disagreement over the magnitude of high latitude warming between data and models for this period of time, raising questions about the driving mechanisms and responsible feedbacks. We have developed a new set of orbital-resolution alkenone-based sea surface temperature (SST) and ice rafted debris (IRD) records from the Norwegian Sea spanning 3.264-3.14 Ma. The SSTs in the Norwegian Sea were 2-3 degrees C warmer than the Holocene average, likely caused by the radiative effect of higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations. There is notable obliquity-driven SST variability with a range of 4...

Stratigraphic framework of early Pliocene fossil localities along the north bank of the Cimarron River, Meade County, Kansas Ameghiniana
Honey,James G.; Peláez-Campomanes,Pablo; Martin,Robert A..
The stratigraphy of early Pliocene (early Blancan) fossiliferous sediments exposed in canyons along the north bank of the Cimarron River in Meade County, Kansas is described as part of a larger, ongoing project to create a refined biostratigraphic model for late Neogene and Pleistocene mammalian fossil localities from the Meade Basin. Because the utility of previously named formation and member names is questionable, we introduce a set of informal names for stratigraphic units in our study area. Sediments in the region are up to 34 m thick, and include a basal sand and gravel ("Bishop gravel") at least 9 m thick, overlain by up to 17 m of lightto pinkish-gray, fine-grained sand and silt, with interbedded calcium carbonate layers. These fine-grained...

[The fossil record of the Eurasian Neogene insectivores (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha, Mammalia) : Part I / L.W. van den Hoek Ostende, C.S. Doukas and J.W.F. Reumer (editors)]: Germany Naturalis
Ziegler, R.; Dahlmann, Th.; Reumer, J.W.F.; Storch, G..
Introduction Research of Miocene and Pliocene insectivores has a long history in Germany. Already in the middle of the 19th century Miocene insectivore species have been described from South German localities. Most of these were authored by Herman von Meyer, who deserves to be named a pioneer of German insectivores research. Weisenau, today part of the city of Mainz, is the type locality of Dimylus paradoxus described by von Meyer (1846:473). Haslach near Ulm yielded the type of Cordylodon haslachensis, also described by von Meyer (1859: 174). The widely known Steinheim fauna yielded among others the type of Parasorex socialis, again described by von Meyer (1865:884). Von Meyer often received fossils from private collectors for determination. Usually, he...

The identity of Isocrassina, Laevastarte and Ashtarotha (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Astartidae) and their representatives from beaches and estuaries in The Netherlands and Pliocene strata in Belgium Naturalis
Pouwer, R..
The identity of the subgenera Isocrassina Chavan, 1950, Laevastarte Hinsch, 1952, and Ashtarotha Dall, 1903, of the genus Astarte Sowerby, 1816 in the family Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) is discussed. Isocrassina has been widely used for Pliocene species in the North Sea Basin. Here it is demonstrated, that this is based on a redefinition of this subgenus, which excludes its type-species. As the North Sea species differ considerably from the type-species of Isocrassina in aspects of ornament and details of the hinge, it is concluded that they should be placed in the genus Laevastarte. A slightly modified definition of Isocrassina and Laevastarte is given and both are raised to genus level. The morphological basis for Ashtarotha is quite weak and it is...

The second record of Borsodia (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) from the Pliocene of the Netherlands Naturalis
Mayhew, D.F..
This note describes a tooth of the extinct lagurine vole genus Borsodia (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) from a borehole at Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Borsodia was previously reported for the first time from the Netherlands on the basis of a tooth dredged from the Oosterschelde (Reumer et al. 2005). Attention is drawn to the use of Borsodia for stratigraphic correlation and climatic interpretation.

The type material and the enamel structure of Villanyia exilis KRETZOI, 1956 (Arvicolidae, Rodentia) Naturalis
Mayhew, D.F..
Re-examination of the two teeth constituting the original type and genotype material of Villanyia exilis KRETZOI, 1956 from Villány-5, Hungary, indicates that subsequently published descriptions need revision. The tooth selected as the lectotype of Villanyia exilis by RABEDER (1981) is considered here to belong to Clethrionomys kretzoii (KOWALSKI, 1958). The second specimen, with morphology in accordance with the original description of Kretzoi, is considered to represent the characters of Villanyia exilis. In order to stabilise the nomenclature in accordance with current usage an application has been made to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. The fine structure of the enamel of Villanyia exilis as defined above is described for the...
